Three of these oxygens are bonded to hydrogen atoms, forming hydroxyl groups (-OH), while the fourth oxygen is doubly bonded to phosphorus, creating a phosphorus-oxygen double bond.
Bonding and Geometry
Phosphoric acid's central phosphorus atom adopts a tetrahedral geometry, which is typical of elements in Group 15 of the periodic table when they form bonds with four substituents. The P–O bonds between the phosphorus and oxygen atoms are covalent and polar. The phosphorus-oxygen double bond (P=O) is typically shorter and stronger than the single P–O bonds, leading to a highly polar molecule. This polarity contributes to the acid's ability to dissociate in water, forming hydronium ions (H₃O⁺) and phosphate ions (PO₄³⁻) when dissolved.
Acidic Nature
The acidic nature of phosphoric acid arises from its ability to release protons (H⁺ ions). When it dissolves in water, it dissociates in a stepwise fashion, losing one proton at a time. The dissociation steps are as follows:
First dissociation: H₃PO₄ → H₂PO₄⁻ + H⁺
Second dissociation: H₂PO₄⁻ → HPO₄²⁻ + H⁺
Third dissociation: HPO₄²⁻ → PO₄³⁻ + H⁺
Each dissociation results in a progressively weaker acid, with the final phosphate ion (PO₄³⁻) being the conjugate base.
