When using phospholipids in aquatic animal feed, the following aspects need to be noted:

I. Addition Amount

The demand for phospholipids varies among different species and growth stages of aquatic animals. Generally, aquatic animals in the larval stage have a relatively high demand for phospholipids due to their rapid growth. For example, the addition amount of phospholipids in the feed for fry and juvenile fish is usually around 2% - 5%, while in the feed for adult fish, it may be 1% - 3%. The addition amount of phospholipids in the feed for shrimps and crabs also changes depending on the growth stage. In the feed for young shrimps and crabs, the addition amount of phospholipids can be 3% - 6%, and for adult shrimps and crabs, it can be appropriately reduced to 2% - 4%. If the addition amount is too low, it may not meet the nutritional needs of aquatic animals, affecting their growth, development, and health. On the other hand, if the addition amount is too high, it may increase the feed cost and may also cause problems such as fat metabolism disorders in aquatic animals.

II. Types of Phospholipids

Common phospholipids include soybean phospholipids and egg yolk phospholipids. Soybean phospholipids have a wide source and low cost, and they are commonly used types of phospholipids in aquatic feed. They contain rich components such as phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, which can effectively improve the growth performance and immunity of aquatic animals. Egg yolk phospholipids have a more comprehensive nutritional composition and higher biological activity, but they are relatively expensive and are generally used in some high-grade aquatic feeds or feeds for precious aquatic species. When choosing the type of phospholipid, factors such as the cost of the feed, the species of aquatic animals, and the aquaculture benefits need to be comprehensively considered.

III. Feed Processing Technology

Conditions such as temperature and humidity during the feed processing process will affect the stability and activity of phospholipids. During the granulation process, if the temperature is too high (exceeding 80°C), it may lead to the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the phospholipids, destroying their structure and function and reducing their nutritional value. Therefore, in feed processing, a low-temperature granulation process should be adopted as much as possible, and the granulation temperature should be controlled at around 60°C - 70°C to protect the activity of phospholipids. In addition, the storage conditions of the feed are also important. The feed should be stored in a dry and cool place, avoiding direct sunlight and high-temperature and high-humidity environments to prevent the oxidation and deterioration of phospholipids.

IV. Interaction with Other Nutrients

There are interactions between phospholipids and nutrients such as proteins, fats, and vitamins. For example, phospholipids can promote the emulsification and absorption of fats and improve the utilization rate of fats. Therefore, in aquatic feeds with a high fat content, appropriately increasing the addition amount of phospholipids can improve the digestion and absorption of fats. At the same time, it can also interact with some vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, etc.) and affect their absorption and metabolism. When designing aquatic feed formulations, the balance and interrelationships among these nutrients need to be considered, and various nutrients should be reasonably matched to give full play to the roles of phospholipids and other nutrients and improve the nutritional value and utilization rate of the feed.

V. Product Quality

The quality of phospholipid products on the market varies. When selecting phospholipid products, attention should be paid to indicators such as product purity, impurity content, acid value, and peroxide value. High-quality phospholipid products should have high purity, low impurity content, and the acid value and peroxide value should be within the specified range. A high acid value indicates a high content of free fatty acids in the phospholipids, which may affect the palatability of the feed and the health of aquatic animals. A high peroxide value indicates that the phospholipids have been oxidized and deteriorated, and their nutritional value and function will be greatly reduced. Therefore, when purchasing phospholipid products, products produced by regular manufacturers should be selected, and suppliers should be required to provide quality inspection reports of the products to ensure that the product quality meets the requirements.
