Phosphatidylcholine (PC):

Head Group: Choline, phosphate, and glycerol

Fatty Acid Tails: Usually two fatty acid chains, such as palmitic acid and oleic acid

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE):

Head Group: Ethanolamine, phosphate, and glycerol

Fatty Acid Tails: Typically two fatty acid chains, such as palmitic acid and stearic acid

Phosphatidylserine (PS):

Head Group: Serine, phosphate, and glycerol

Fatty Acid Tails: Usually two fatty acid chains, such as palmitic acid and oleic acid

Phosphatidylinositol (PI):

Head Group: Inositol, phosphate, and glycerol

Fatty Acid Tails: Typically two fatty acid chains, such as palmitic acid and linoleic acid

Phosphatidic Acid (PA):

Head Group: Phosphate and glycerol

Fatty Acid Tails: Usually one or two fatty acid chains, such as palmitic acid and oleic acid

Cardiolipin:

Head Groups: Glycerol and phosphate (contains four fatty acid tails)

Fatty Acid Tails: Variable fatty acid chains

The fatty acid tails in phospholipids can vary in length and degree of saturation.Common fatty acids found in phospholipids include saturated fatty acids like palmitic acid and stearic acid, as well as unsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid and linoleic acid.

Phospholipids are amphipathic, meaning they have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions.   This property allows them to form lipid bilayers in aqueous environments, such as cell membranes.The diversity in phospholipid composition contributes to the fluidity, flexibility, and functionality of cell membranes, influencing various cellular processes.
